In ‘Heart Throbs’ Shirin explores gender representation and cultural exchange between Europe and Iran as inspired by 19th century Qajar paintings. Beauty standards at the time diverged from the modern gendered convention, with men wearing makeup and women fixing side-burns to their face. Using her face as a stage, she embodies the archetype of Amrad (the adolescent male), Amradnuma (the adult male) and Fukuli (the male who mimics the look of the European dandy) in these visually striking portraits.

Sophie Lloyd, Semi-domesticated Poodle
Regular price
£3,500.00
2025
Sugar, royal icing on wood
50 x 45 cm
Semi-domesticated Poodleis a mosaic made of hand-cut sugar glass. Alongside her sugar work, a reactive poodle came into the artist’s life, deemed ‘the worst dog in 40 years’ by canine behaviourists. Using reimagined artifact and drawing on historical narratives Lloyd playfully questions where our behavioural instincts come from. She often likens her process to taming a wild animal as the sugar’s reactive quality can produce unpredictable, tragic, and unexpectantly beautiful effects. Her mosaic Semi-domesticated Poodle is a painstaking piecing together of fragile material, full of behind-the-scene failures as an ode to the artist’s dog and the unlikely bond between them.
Sophie makes expressive and stylised sugar sculptures. With fixed open mouths, candy colours and sickly sweet material, these figures evoke both gluttony and the uncanny.

Yijia Wu, Fallen Pear
Regular price
£3,360.00
2025
Alabaster, brass
15 cm x 9 cm x 8 cm
The Pears series began with A Pear is not a Pair, a stone sculpture with a silver spoon stem that explored cultural symbolism within the artist’s heritage. In Chinese culture, sharing a pear is considered symbolic of separation, due to the homophonic link between “pear” (梨) and “separate” (离). The use of stone embodies the impossibility of sharing, while the silver spoon stem visually invites it, creating a quiet contradiction.
This year, as members of the artist’s family began living in different countries, the work evolved. By cutting the pear into halves, she echoes the current distance and shifting relationships within her family, turning the sculpture into both a marker of separation and a gesture of togetherness.
