Camila Barvo is a Colombian textile artist and designer who’s work explores soft sculpture by combining embroidery, video, and fibre/fabric manipulation as powerful languages to document themes of femininity and identity. As a Latin American maker, her cultural heritage and material identity deeply informs her practice. Her work frequently incorporates materials
like fique, jute, and coffee, thereby honouring and contributing to the celebration of Colombia’s material culture.

In her latest work, Barvo delves into the embodied knowledge inherent in hair. By magnifying everyday gestures of hair care and translating the acts of braiding and knotting into textile art, she examines the profound connection between hair, the body’s memory and identity.

This research and exploration have led to several achievements, including being featured in the Royal College of Art Sustain Lab’s 2024 Annual Exhibition, receiving the Highly Commended UK Textile Society Postgraduate Award in 2024, and exhibiting at Blackdot Gallery as part of the London Design Festival 2024.
