Calum Knight's House of Bandits Top Picks

Calum Knight, Creative Director and Brand Strategist joined us in-store at our pop up on the Lower Ground floor of Selfridges to share his favourite pieces as well as offering deeper insight into the artists behind them. He highlighted the importance of understanding the creative process, because what goes into a piece is just as important as the piece itself.
Calum Knight's first pick was Dean Hoy's bear called Rae. Dean is a London-based visual artist, working between soft sculpture, film, and photo. His soft sculpture work is under ongoing project ‘Bears Who Care’, it was born from a desire to foster connection and express emotions in an isolated world, while also giving new life to teddy bears that tugged at Dean's heartstrings, found discarded outside charity shops and on London streets.
"They’re art objects, but they bring sentimentality out of us. This one's actually quite happy. Quite a lot of his are kind of forlorn, this one's quite cheery compared to some of the heartbreakingly beautiful deers that he produces."
Next up Calum picked Kasia Wozniak's Noir (4). Kasia Wozniak is an artist whose work investigates the tangibility of the photograph and how we view photographs today. Using predominantly the wet plate collodion technique, she interrogates ‘truth’ in photography and questions how we experience the time present and time past.
"The reason I love her work, and so drawn to it is whilst it's obviously very modern photography, it's using wet plate, very traditional photographic techniques from the 1850s and I just love how it really makes you question the kind of temporality of the image."
Calum's final standout piece from ourb pop up is this John Alexander Skelton jacket. John Alexander Skelton is a London-based designer. His collections are based on his research into English heritage and folklore, and the traditions of textiles and manufacturing industries. Working closely with weavers and mills across England, Skelton creates handcrafted silhouettes that draw reference from 19th-century menswear such as frock coats and high-waisted trousers.
"What John does so well in a way that they've really managed to build their own business away from the industrialised fashion scene. So this jacket, for example, there's only five of in the world, So this jacket, for example, there's only five of in the world, and really beautifully small run fabrics."
