Inspired: Alison Wilding OBE in conversation with Jo Applin
Renowned sculptor Alison Wilding OBE will be joined by professor Jo Applin to discuss her extraordinary career to date.
Tuesday, February 4th · 7:30 - 8:45pm GMT
Our Inspired series is back!
Challenging the expectations of sculpture since the 1970s, Alison Wilding OBE RA blends diverse materials, techniques and forms to explore contrasts such as containment and concealment, stability and instability and the tension between a material’s assumed qualities and her manipulations. Fascinated by sculpture’s environmental context, she considers how her works fit into the world, emphasising the dynamic relationship between object and audience.
Wilding’s sculptures resist casual observation, instead they demand focused engagement. Their physical expressiveness invites viewers to move around them, fostering a dialogue where subject and object intertwine. Darkness and light, visibility and invisibility, and mobility and entrapment are central to her practice, creating works that challenge and captivate.
Enjoy a drink on us and an unforgettable evening with one of contemporary art's greats.
Sarabande Foundation
Sarabande was set up by the late designer, Lee Alexander McQueen, who left the majority of his estate to support creative and visionary talent. In addition to providing scholarships and studio space for artists, Sarabande produces a number of events, from the practical to the inspirational.
Sarabande operates from a listed Stable Block conversion in Haggerston and two Grade II listed townhouses in Tottenham, where 30 studios form a creative community with designers and artists from multiple disciplines. Immersed in the hub of East London’s rich creative spirit, Sarabande exudes all that encompasses the creative sphere. The building is home to a plethora of artisans reflecting the multifarious span of Lee’s talent and the variety of craftspeople he worked with his own collections. Amongst others, our tactile artists include sculptors, fashion designers, jewellers, textile designers, painters, performance artists, silversmiths, costume designers, ceramicists, and dancers. Alongside these, Sarabande also houses filmmakers, animators, photographers, digital designers, and visual artists.
