Shannon Swinburn (b. 1993, Portsmouth, UK)
is an award-winning textile artist dedicated to exploring the intrinsic connections between gender, textiles, and modern-day computing. Her work aims to highlight the often-overlooked contributions of women in emergent technology. She uses speculation, counterfactual histories, and material storytelling to bring these narratives to the forefront.
In her practice, Shannon employs a wide range of mediums, including metalwork, weaving, and physical computing, to create innovative craft pieces inspired by technology and health. Fascinated by how both new and old technologies can inform innovation, she often draws inspiration from both cutting-edge technology and endangered craft processes. Her process involves delving into both traditional and unconventional archives to uncover and highlight marginalised stories. Moving forward, Shannon plans to connect her work with other archives that hold marginalised histories
to continue to uncover and share these important narratives.
She recently graduated from the Royal College of Art with an MA in Textiles (2024), having previously completed a BA in Graphic Design at Central Saint Martins (2016). Her awards include the Haberdashers’ Scholarship (2023), The Robin and Lucienne Day Foundation Prize (2024), and The Textile Society Student Bursary (2024).
