Bex Massey (b.1985, Newcastle upon Tyne) is
a British artist whose work examines the role of painting and the language of display in the face of popular culture. She amalgamates simulacra and allegory to investigate notions of ‘worth’ via motifs and tones extracted from her childhood. Massey’s previous works and exhibitions have engaged
the codes and history of queer culture, along
with markers of selfhood and Northern identity. Recent works utilise image pairings to encourage allusion to female bodies, building an underlying sexual tension imbued by the artist into quotidian objects.
Massey graduated with a BA in fine art from The School of Art, Architecture and Design in London in 2007, and later completed an MA in fine art at Chelsea College of Arts in 2013. Since obtaining her master’s degree, Massey has been awarded and shortlisted for numerous awards, most recently the Macfarlanes Art Prize, 2024. Recent solo exhibitions include My deuce, My double, Seventeen, London (2024) Massey has also exhibited widely in international group shows and fairs. held in private collections across the UK, Europe, USA and Saudi Arabia. She is represented by Seventeen.
