Introducing Claudia Ramirez Julio as our new MA Slade Scholar!

We are honoured to announce Claudia Ramírez Julio as our MA Slade Scholar! Claudia’s journey is one of profound resilience and artistic brilliance, embodying the spirit of perseverance and cultural pride.

Claudia, born in the Atacama Desert during the tumultuous times of the Chilean military coup, carries the rich traditions of her Diaguita and Mapuche ancestors. Her art is a beautiful tapestry that intertwines her Indigenous heritage with contemporary perspectives, creating artwork that sheds light on social, Indigenous and cultural identity stories hidden and manipulated to be ignored.

Inspired by her daughter’s artistic talent and the storytelling traditions of her family, Claudia began to explore her own creative potential. Writing children’s stories and poetry, she found solace and expression in words. Her journey in art education began with adult education courses and culminated in a BA in Fine Arts from Goldsmiths University, where she graduated with distinction.

Claudia's passion for helping others led her to volunteer in Colombia with children displaced by guerrilla conflicts. Working with families near Bogotá, she dedicated three years to making a difference in the lives of those affected by violence and instability. This experience deepened her understanding of social issues and reinforced her commitment to using art as a tool for healing and change.

Claudia’s work is a vibrant exploration of identity, memory, and culture. Utilising performance, moving images, textiles, and sound, she constructs narratives that reclaim and celebrate Indigenous stories and experiences. Her art is an instrument of healing, a means of reconnecting with her roots, and a powerful commentary on social and cultural issues.

Claudia Ramírez Julio’s story serves as a powerful reminder that no matter the obstacles, it is never too late to follow your passions and create a better future. Her dedication to her art, her heritage, and her volunteer work inspires us all, demonstrating the profound impact of perseverance and creativity.
