Inspiration Series | Giovanni Corvaja in conversation with Russel Cassleton Elliott
5 NOVEMBER 19.00-21.00PM
Not many can say they’ve mastered the art of turning gold into fibre, or that they have a Laboratory High vacuum Chamber in their studio – which they built themselves. Not many, except for Giovanni Corvaja, devotee of innovation of metals.
Starting November with a phenomenal event, we held an inspirational talk with the renowned jewellery artist, Giovanni Corvaja in conversation with Russel Cassleton Elliott. Undoubtedly, Corvaja has brought novel and bewildering approaches to his craft and the world of jewellery, excelling beyond what is fathomable. Adding 'inventor' and 'innovator' to his extensive list of accolades this was a truly fascinating and inspirational conversation.
Years of dedication and commitment have led to Giovanni's work being featured in several exhibitions at key galleries and museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the V&A, London. At just the age of 13, Giovanni commenced his studies in goldsmithing at the Pietro Selvatico School of Art in Padua, under the teaching of the master goldsmith Francesco Pavanin in 1985. It is during this period that his first works in titanium and gold emerged (1988-89) followed by the first pieces he made in gold wire, using a technique of three-dimensional knitting of his own creation (1989-90). Maintaining grand accomplishments at a young age, Giovanni graduated from the Royal College of Arts with a Degree of Master of Arts in 1992, returning back to Padua to resume his goldsmithing career. Now, at Sarabande, Giovanni has come to share his years of expertise and discovery, passing down knowledge to those who seek it.
