Human Puzzle: Lulu Wang Explores the Complexities of Intimacy, Identity & Human Connection
Interdisciplinary artist-in-residence Lulu Wang works at the intersection of performance, drawing, and sculpture. Her practice explores visual experimentation and movement to question the evolving notion of identity across hybrid cultures.
At Sarabande, Wang presented Human Puzzle, continuing her success in seamlessly bridging the physical and digital realms. Incorporating AI technology, dance, and post-humanist narratives, her work uses abstract visual language to explore the symbiotic connection between emotional worlds and their physical manifestations. Through this, Wang reflects on the imperfect nature of humanity and its existence within both reality and fantasy.
'I always try to create this harmony in my work that understands the intimate relationship and understands how we express our love'
The exhibition opened with a performance that engaged the audience through participation, Human Puzzle pieced together the nuances and intricacies behind our human existence, blurring the boundaries between individuality and collectivity, Lulu pieced together the intricate nuances that define us.
'We need to be gentle and understand each other, but also need to be sharp and always keep our vision clear, and always seek to the answer that never exists in the book.'
Wang’s work has been presented internationally at institutions and galleries such as Whitechapel Gallery, Tate Modern, Southbank Centre, Gazelli Art House, Cromwell Place, Christie’s and The Place theatre in London; UK Pavilion Expo 2020 in Dubai; and DOOR Foundation in Amsterdam.
