Mythology is the unconscious expression of human emotions, offering a way to cope with limitations, fears, and unfulfilled desires. This project examines gender in Iranian mythical creatures by exploring ancient tales rooted in Pre-Zoroastrian traditions.
Among the most feared supernatural beings are the Divs - monstrous figures of darkness and disorder. Their gender is ambiguous, yet many narratives depict female Divs as figures of disruption, unsettling identity, form, and structure. One such figure is Booshasb, a female Div of laziness and procrastination. With her long arms, she grabs people and prevents them from waking up. She is the one responsible for making your eyelids heavy in the morning.
Characters like this still resonate with the psychological challenges that we face today. Through self-portraiture, this project aims to relive and awaken the sensibilities that underpin these mythologies.
