‘The Weight of Turning’; a group exhibition curated by Sarabande residents Antonia Caicedo Holguín and Siphiwe-Nokukhanya Mnguni showcases new and recent work by emerging contemporary artists who explore the experience of creating work in unprecedented times. Featuring works in ceramics, painting, objects and fashion, the exhibiting artists consider what it means to create from a place of instability.

Taking the concept of a dancer’s pirouette as a starting point the show explores how as people, we are often unbalanced or untethered but need to find ways to ground ourselves. How do artists find space and energy to make artwork in a world that is more and more off kilter?

Addressing themes of care, gender, movement, diasporic identities, grief and social structures, these eleven artists interrogate the societal barriers between them and their practices.

This is Caicedo Holguín and Mnguni’s debut collaboration, both artists explore the boundaries of figurative painting in their individual artistic practices but deviate in approach. For this presentation, they extend the themes they explore into the curation of the show, threading the work into one story.

Exhibiting artists include Antonia Caicedo Holguín, Jo Grogan, Anna-Lena Krause, Jack Laver, Siphiwe-Nokukhanya Mnguni, Bisila Noha, Louis Petit, Jane Preston, George Richardson, Olubiyi Thomas and Helena Palmeira.
