'Family Portrait' Group Show, curated by Jennifer Jones

Family Portrait brings together five Sarabande artists who offer a subversive exploration of this genre. Moving beyond figurative depiction, the exhibition challenges familiar notions of representation. The works invite audiences to reconsider traditional ideas of portraiture and engage with the intimate, layered ways we define and reflect on family today. Here, family is evoked through memory, domestic space, and material traces of everyday life. Through sculpture, textiles, framing, and painting, familial experience surfaces as tensions, imprints, and inheritances- both tangible and intangible.
Shifting away from visual likeness, Family Portrait centres on how family feels rather than how it appears – the awkwardness, the warmth, the rituals, the silences. It’s a show about presence and absence, of what we carry with us and what we try to leave behind. In this reimagining, the family portrait is no longer a static image, but a living, evolving reflection of what family can mean.
