Pushing the Boundaries: Sophie Lloyd and Beverley Duckworth at New Contemporaries Exhibition

Sophie Lloyd and Beverly Duckworth present works in the New Contemporaries exhibition returning to the ICA!

The New Contemporaries exhibition at the ICA London offers an exciting glimpse into the next generation of artists. With a curated selection of artists pushing boundaries and challenging the norms. The show, brimming with dynamic and often provocative works, creates a space where ideas around identity, politics, culture, and society collide in unexpected ways.

Sophie Lloyd’s work critiques the pervasive control of consumerism, while exploring the consumer’s own complicity in allowing it to take hold. Through her playful use of materials like sugar and lead, Lloyd mirrors this dynamic, grounding her practice in the escapism and numbing effects of media and entertainment.

Sophie reimagines forms of entertainment from the pre-cinema era, offering a nuanced, half-hearted rejection of modernism in the process. In the New contemporaries exhibition, Lloyds work stands out as powerful reflections on the body, gender, and the physical world we inhabit, offering insight into how we might navigate identity in a constantly shifting society.

In residence at High Road, Beverley Duckworth's practice centres on the afterlife of the discarded and is rooted in small acts of reparation - sewing scraps together, watering fragile seedlings and nurturing the regenerative power of composting from waste materials.

As she tackles ideas surrounding power dynamics, sexuality, and social constructs, Beverley brings an entirely different energy to New Contemporaries with Residue. Her installation and multimedia pieces challenge our understanding of space, bringing together elements of theatre, film, and performance into her installations.

We want to give a huge congratulations to both Sophie and Beverley for continuing to push the boundaries with their work and ever-keeping us on our toes! To stay up to date with the leaps and bounds our artists are continually making, sign up to our newsletter and follow us on Instagram.
