CRAFT WEEK 2022
SHADOW PUPPET WORKSHOP WITH KIRICO UEDA
19:00 - 20:30
Doors open at 18:30 for refreshments kindly provided by Will Sark beers. Workshop begins promptly at 19:00 so make sure to arrive on time!
Shadows that tell a tale of time long gone...Kirico Ueda is a multi-disciplinary artist who is fascinated by the magical and primitive power of folktales, myths and theatre. Optimising photographing, sculpture and printmaking, Kirico brings these tales to the contemporary art scene.
Yet, her use of shadow puppetry is the most ancient of these mediums, spanning across centuries and different corners of the world - China, India, Egypt, Turkey, Syria and France- just to name a few.
As part of London Craft Week 2022, Kirico invites the old tradition of shadow puppetry into the Sarabande mainspace. With the lights low and the shadows high, this workshop will guide you in the creation of your very own shadow puppet. In this Craft Week-special workshop, the shadows are out to play. Let the theatrics begin!
About Kirico Ueda:
Kirico Ueda is a multidisciplinary artist, having completed a BA in Fashion Communication and Promotion at Central Saint Martins in 2019.
Fascinated by its magical and primitive power that goes beyond cultural identities, she often refers to motifs and stories from folktales, myths and theatres in her practice. Kirico deconstructs and reassembles motifs and stories from all times and places to create a narrative, using mediums spanning from photography, puppetry, sculpture to printmaking. Her works have been shown in her solo exhibition ‘Participation Mystique’ in Tokyo in 2020, and several group exhibitions in London, Tokyo and Kyoto. Kirico currently lives and works in London.
